Charles Brooks Jr. becomes first man executed by lethal injection

After Charles Brooks Jr. and Woody Lourdes stole a car in 1976, they tossed Fort Worth auto mechanic David Gregory into the trunk – and then shot him once through the head. Brooks and Lourdes were given the death penalty in separate trials. Lourdes’ conviction was overturned on appeal (he was paroled after serving 11 years), but Brooks became the first man ever executed by the newly adopted means of lethal injection.
