Convicted murderer John Lee spared death when gallows malfunctions

02.23.1885

English criminal John “Baddacombe” Lee was convicted in 1885 of stabbing his employer to death and sentenced to death. He gained fame when he survived three attempts to hang him due to a malfunctioning trapdoor on the gallows. His sentence was commuted to life in prison.
