Barbara Baekeland, a socialite who married into a wealthy family, was stabbed to death in her London penthouse by her troubled son, Antony. When police arrived, he was on the phone ordering Chinese food. Antony was sent to a psychiatric hospital but released in 1980 due to a bureaucratic error. He then beat and stabbed his grandmother in New York City; she survived. He died the following year of suicide in Riker’s Island prison.
