Gary Ridgway, dubbed the Green River Killer since his first five victims were found near Washington’s Green River, was convicted of murdering 49 women between 1982 and 1998. The majority were sex workers and underage runaways whose bodies he would dump in wooded areas of the Northwest (and sometimes molest post-mortem). At the time of his arrest in 2001, he was believed to be the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. After pleading guilty and agreeing to disclose the locations of many still-missing victims, he received a life sentence.
