For years, James “Whitey” Bulger oversaw a gang of Irish American mobsters in the Boston area while also serving as an FBI informant leaking intel about the Italian American Patriarca crime family, a situation that inspired movies like The Departed. After Bulger's FBI handler tipped him off in 1994 that an inditement was coming, Bulger went into hiding for 16 years and was added to the bureau’s Most Wanted Fugitives list. In 2013, he was convicted of racketeering and complicity in 11 murders—and then beaten to death by fellow inmates in 2018, at age 89.
