Members of the doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo released deadly sarin nerve gas on five Tokyo subway trains during the morning rush hour, killing 13 people and injuring over 6,000 others. In the days after, panic continued as more attacks followed and cult leader Shoko Asahara went into hiding.
