Jean Harris, the headmistress of a posh all-girls school in Virginia, shot and killed her longtime lover, Herman Tarnower, a cardiologist who devised the best-selling “Scarsdale Diet” in the 1970s. Harris, hooked on methamphetamines prescribed by Tarnower, claimed she wanted to commit suicide in front of Tarnower and accidentally shot him in a struggle over the gun. Following a sensational trial, she was convicted of second-degree murder and served 12 years in prison. She died in 2012.
