In a polarizing case centering on issues of race and vigilantism, Bernhard Goetz shot four Black teenagers on a New York City subway after he alleged that they had tried to rob him. All four survived, though one was paralyzed and suffered brain damage. Goetz, who initially fled to Vermont but surrendered to police after nine days, was charged with attempted murder, assault and other crimes – but only convicted of carrying an unlicensed firearm. He served eight months of a one-year sentence; in 1996, he was ordered to pay $43 million in civil damages to his paralyzed victim.
