Two months after receiving guilty verdicts in a trial that captured the public imagination, hippy cult leader Charles Manson and three of his female followers were sentenced to death for their roles in the brutal slayings of actress Sharon Tate and six others in August 1969. The sentences were reduced to life in prison after California abolished the death penalty; Manson died in prison in 2017.
