01.22.1994

In a case that sparked both late-night jokes and a debate about domestic violence, Virginia housewife Lorena Bobbitt cut off the penis of her sleeping husband, John, with a kitchen knife. (It was reattached after a nearly 10-hour operation.) She asserted that John had subjected her to years of beatings and rapes, including that fateful night in 1993. (He has denied the claims and was acquitted of marital sexual assault in 1993.) Tried for malicious wounding, Lorena was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
