Mark David Chapman became infamous on December 8, 1980, when he killed The Beatles’ John Lennon. He shot Lennon four times outside of the musician’s apartment building in New York City, and Lennon was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Roosevelt Hospital, stunning the world. Chapman—who shockingly stayed on the scene and calmly told the doorman, “I just shot John Lennon”—pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in June 1981 and was sentenced to 20 years to life on August 24.

It was a tragic story that captivated audiences at the time, and that both Beatles fans and true crime enthusiasts have tried to make sense of over the years.

Who Is Mark David Chapman?

It’s not solely the celebrity angle that has made Lennon's murder an enduring moment in American history; it’s also the mystery that surrounds Chapman himself and why he killed the musician. His problems with mental health have been well-documented; he was evaluated by more than a dozen experts before his guilty plea, and Judge Dennis Edwards Jr. recommended he undergo psychiatric treatment as part of his sentence.

Over the years, Chapman has given conflicting statements about what motivated him to kill Lennon. Even before the murder he was vocal about his obsession with the J.D. Salinger novel The Catcher in the Rye, and per 1987 media reports, cited it numerous times during the psychiatric evaluations, at one point claiming he felt “called out for a special purpose, to promote the reading of the book.”

However, in 2022, Chapman told the parole board he was seeking fame by committing the murder, echoing earlier statements he made at a 2010 parole hearing. At that time, Chapman claimed Lennon was only one of several celebrities he considered killing. Per earlier reporting, another potential target was Lennon’s Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney.

Chapman may be always somewhat of an enigma, yet his circumstances haven’t changed much since his 1981 sentencing.

Where Is Mark David Chapman Now?

Chapman was incarcerated in New York’s Attica Correctional Facility from his sentencing in 1981 to 2012. While there, he worked as a legal clerk and kitchen assistant, and in 2004, a Department of Corrections official told CNN that Chapman spent most of his day “working on housekeeping or in the library.”

In May 2012, he was transferred to Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, N.Y. Almost a decade later, in March 2022, Chapman was moved again to the Green Haven Correctional Facility, where he currently remains in custody.

Green Haven is a maximum-security prison in the town of Beekman, N.Y., that also housed mobster Joey Gallo and numerous serial killers, including Arthur Shawcross (also known as the Genesee River Killer), and Ronald DeFeo Jr., whose murder of his family inspired the novel The Amityville Horror.

While little information is available about his activities inside Green Haven, details about Chapman’s personal life continue to be made public. He remains married to Gloria Abe, whom he wed in 1979—and who he told in 1980 about his plan to kill Lennon. Per an essay she wrote for Alliance Life magazine in 2017, Gloria said Chapman even had her hold the murder weapon, but she later claimed he had thrown it into the ocean. Her story was the basis for the play Yoko’s Husband’s Killer’s Japanese Wife, Gloria, which made its New York City debut in April 2026.

Will Mark David Chapman Be Released from Prison?

Chapman became eligible for parole in 2000, but protests in New York City opposing his release were documented until 2018, and Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono has repeatedly expressed her desire to keep him behind bars. He was denied parole for the 14th time on August 27, 2025.

However, his next parole hearing could have a very different outcome: New York’s State Senate is currently considering the Fair and Timely Parole Act. Should that legislation pass, per a New York City Bar committee report supporting the legislation, the amended law would presume that an inmate eligible for parole such as Chapman will be granted release with the exception being “there is a current and unreasonable risk the person will violate the law if released, and such risk cannot be mitigated by parole supervision.”

Chapman was 25 years old when he killed Lennon. His next parole hearing is scheduled for February 2027, three months before his 72nd birthday.
