Fred West, a British serial killer who committed at least a dozen murders of young women between 1967 and 1987, asphyxiated himself with a handmade rope in his jail cell while awaiting trial. West admitted to killing his first wife and teamed up with his second wife, Rose, on many of his later crimes – which typically involved sexual assault, torture, dismemberment and burial in the cellar or garden of their home.
