"Crazy" Joe Gallo, a mobster who kept a pet lion and openly challenged his bosses in the Colombo crime family, was shot and killed while celebrating his birthday at Umberto’s Clam House in Manhattan’s Little Italy. No charges were filed, though the killing was believed to be in retaliation for Gallo’s suspected role in the shooting of Joe Colombo a year earlier.
