Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old freshman at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh University, was brutally raped and murdered by a classmate in her dorm room. When her parents learned that on-campus violence was rampant, they lobbied Congress to pass the Clery Act requiring colleges to report crime statistics. (The killer’s death sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment without parole.)
