In a notorious racially motivated attack in the Howard Beach section of Queens, New York, a group of white teenagers attacked three young Black men outside a pizza parlor. Two of the victims were severely beaten and one, Michael Griffith, was fatally struck by a car after fleeing onto a nearby highway. Three local teens were convicted of manslaughter and a fourth was acquitted in a case that exposed raw racial tensions in the city in the 1980s.
