A man using the alias Dan Cooper hijacked a Northwest Orient flight to Seattle from Portland, Ore., claiming to have a bomb and demanding $200,000 in ransom. After releasing the passengers and collecting his money, he directed the crew to take off for Mexico at a low altitude – allowing him to parachute from a rear door over Washington’s Lewis River and disappear without a trace. Despite a well-publicized investigation, Cooper’s identity and fate remain unknown.
