Alcatraz, a maximum-security prison on a rocky island in San Francisco Bay with a reputation for being inescapable, shut down after 30 years due to high operational costs. The facility, dubbed “The Rock,” housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals, including including Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and pioneered innovations like metal detectors.
