Jack Teich, a wealthy 34-year-old businessman, was abducted at gunpoint from his driveway in suburban Kings Point, New York. Chained for a week inside a closet, he was released after his family paid a then-record ransom of $750,000 (nearly $5 million in 2025 dollars) – which his abductors claimed would be used “for the poor.” Korean War veteran Richard Williams was convicted for his role in the crime in 1978; after his sentence was overturned on appeal in 1994, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges. No other suspects were charged.
