Prosperous Kansas farmer Herb Clutter and his wife and two teenage children were roused from their sleep by two recently paroled ex-convicts hoping to steal quick cash from a safe they falsely believed Clutter had. When their search failed, they shot and killed all four family members. Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, who were executed for the crime in 1965, lived on in Truman Capote’s nonfiction bestseller about the case, “In Cold Blood.”
