Businessman David Hendricks claimed to be on a work trip when his wife, Susan, and their children, ages 5 to 9, were hacked to death with an axe and butcher knife in their Bloomington, Ill., home. Authorities found inconsistencies in Hendricks’ account and he was convicted of four counts of murder in 1984 on largely circumstantial evidence. He was acquitted in a retrial seven years later.
