Brian and Katie Maggiore, a young married couple walking their dog in Rancho Cordova, Calif., were chased and shot to death by Joseph DeAngelo Jr. The so-called Golden State Killer went on to slay 11 more victims across the state in a crime spree so geographically wide that authorities thought they were chasing more than one suspect until DNA testing helped them narrow their search. DeAngelo was apprehended in 2018 and later sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
