In a case dubbed the “Crime of the Century,” the 20-month-old son of pioneering aviator Charles Lindbergh was abducted from the second story of his New Jersey home – with a homemade ladder and ransom note left behind. Despite payment of the $50,000 ransom, the child’s dead body was found in a nearby wooded area two months later. German-born carpenter carpenter Bruno Richard Hauptmann was convicted of the crime and executed in the electric chair in 1936.
