Charles Manson and three of his followers are convicted of murder

In a case that captured the public imagination, hippy cult leader Charles Manson and three of his female followers were convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the brutal slayings of actress Sharon Tate and six others in August 1969. The death sentences all four received were reduced to life in prison after California abolished the death penalty; Manson died in prison in 2017.
