At the height of Prohibition, seven members of George "Bugs" Moran's Chicago gang of bootleggers were gunned down by men dressed as police officers in a hit allegedly ordered by rival gangster Al Capone. (Moran himself escaped by arriving late.) No arrests emerged from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, but the brutal attack increased public pressure to combat urban lawlessness and end Prohibition.
