In a misguided attempt to impress actress Jodie Foster, John Hinckley Jr. fired six shots at President Ronald Reagan outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. Reagan survived the assassination attempt, although one bullet missing his heart by inches. Press Secretary James Brady, who was permanently disabled from the shooting, helped inspire legislation mandating background checks for most gun purchases. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and institutionalized until 2016.
