Convicted murderer Gary Gilmore is executed

After murdering two young men in Utah in July 1976, Gary Gilmore became a central figure in the push to reinstitute the death penalty in the U.S. after a decade-long ban. Gilmore, convicted of murder after a two-day trial, refused to appeal his death sentence and was executed by firing squad in 1977. His last words: “Let’s do it.”
