What Did Investigators Find in Portugal?
In June 2025, Portuguese and German investigators spent three days searching approximately 120 acres of scrubland, wells and abandoned structures near Atalaia, roughly three miles from the Ocean Club resort where Madeleine disappeared.
The operation, requested by German prosecutors, deployed drones, excavators and ground-penetrating radar. Investigators collected several objects for examination. Early reports referred broadly to bone and clothing fragments, but contemporaneous reporting indicated that the bones appeared to be from animals and that the clothing was adult-sized. No major discovery was announced when the search concluded.
An object recovered during a highly publicized search is not necessarily evidence of a crime, much less evidence against a particular suspect.
“After nearly 20 years, every item of evidence carries two burdens: relevance and reliability,” Stephens says.
Investigators would need to establish where an item came from, how it was preserved and whether it has any connection to Madeleine or Brueckner. Clothing or bone fragments found in an open area after almost two decades would also raise questions about contamination and chain of custody.
British investigators reportedly received additional German police files concerning Brueckner in 2026 that they believe contain crucial evidence in the case. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Operation Grange, its investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, remains active and that officers continued discussions with German and Portuguese authorities. However, officials did not publicly confirm the contents of the reported dossier.
Previous reporting has described disturbing material recovered from Brueckner’s properties, including child sexual abuse images, writings about abducting and assaulting children and photographs connected to locations in Portugal. Cellphone data also indicates that Brueckner’s phone received a call in Praia da Luz about an hour before Madeleine disappeared.
That could help establish opportunity and behavior. It does not, by itself, establish that Brueckner entered the apartment or harmed Madeleine.
“Circumstantial evidence can be an evidential chain, or it can be a box of loose, disjointed links,” Stephens says. “The prosecution would need to demonstrate that the various pieces fit together in a way that points convincingly to only one conclusion while excluding realistic alternatives.”
Could Advances in DNA Analysis Change the Case?
Even if the material recovered in Portugal does not produce a new DNA match, advances in forensic analysis could allow investigators to extract more information from evidence collected years ago.
The original investigation produced complex DNA mixtures from the McCanns’ vacation apartment and rental car, but the findings were inconclusive. A British forensic scientist determined that one car sample was too complex to establish whether its partial overlap with Madeleine’s DNA profile represented a genuine match or occurred by chance.
Dr. Mark Perlin, chief scientific and executive officer of Cybergenetics, said probabilistic genotyping uses computer modeling to untangle complex DNA mixtures, estimate the genetic profiles of the people who may have contributed to them and calculate how strongly the evidence supports a potential match. Perlin developed TrueAllele, one of the software systems that performs this analysis, and has offered to examine the McCann data without charge. Authorities have not accepted his offer.
Crucially, investigators may not need an intact physical sample if the original electronic laboratory data was preserved. “We don’t need samples,” Perlin tells A&E Crime + Investigation. “Our starting point is the data.”
The software could compare the genetic profiles inferred from a mixture against Madeleine, Brueckner or other people connected to the case. But Perlin cautions that newer technology does not guarantee a successful prosecution. It could strengthen a potential match, exclude someone or show that the evidence remains too limited to answer a legally useful question.
“It’s not magic,” Perlin says. “It’s just getting all the information out of the evidence.”
That distinction is especially important in the McCann case. Finding Madeleine’s DNA in an apartment where she stayed would be expected, while DNA from her family members in their rental car could have an innocent explanation. For a fresh analysis to materially strengthen a prosecution, it would likely need to connect Brueckner to Madeleine, a relevant object or a location associated with her disappearance in a way that cannot be readily explained away.
Is There Enough to Charge Christian Brueckner?
In January 2025, German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said there was “currently no prospect of an indictment” in the case. Brueckner was subsequently released in September 2025 after completing a seven-year sentence for the unrelated rape of a 72-year-old woman in Portugal.
German law does not require prosecutors to possess a body, confession or any particular category of forensic evidence before filing charges. Under Section 170 of Germany’s Code of Criminal Procedure, prosecutors may submit an indictment when an investigation provides sufficient grounds for public charges.
Circumstantial evidence can support a prosecution, Stephens says, but the individual facts must form a persuasive chain that excludes realistic alternative explanations.
Brueckner’s criminal history also cannot substitute for proof that he committed this crime. He was released from prison in September 2025 after serving a seven-year sentence for the unrelated rape of a 72-year-old woman. Since his release, he has faced new scrutiny over his conduct, including a June 2026 altercation in which he allegedly resisted police officers and left one with a knee injury. He was reportedly under investigation, but had not been convicted, in connection with that incident. His 2024 acquittal on separate sexual-offense charges likewise illustrated the danger of relying on witnesses or allegations that may not withstand scrutiny.
“A prosecutor does not charge a theory,” Stephens says. “A prosecutor charges a provable case.”
The renewed searches and exchange of files show that the investigation is moving. Whether it is moving toward an indictment is another question.
Stephens warns, “The danger is mistaking momentum for proof.”
