A Black Missouri man named Raymond Gunn who had been arrested for the murder of a white schoolteacher was seized by a white mob, led to the roof of a schoolhouse four miles away and then burned alive. The case drew national attention, particularly since the local sheriff declined to activate National Guard troops that had been deployed to prevent a lynching.
