01.30.1948

Just six months after India achieved independence from British colonial rule, the dynamic leader of that movement, Mahatma Gandhi, was shot dead following a prayer service in New Delhi. The killer was Nathuram Godse, an extreme Hindu nationalist who objected to Gandhi’s efforts to reconcile the interests of Hindus and Muslims as the former colony split into two nations, India and Pakistan. Godse and a co-conspirator were executed by hanging in 1949.
