Marshall Applewhite led a UFO religious cult called Heaven’s Gate whose members lived together in a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Over the course of three days, all 39 cultists committed suicide in the apparent belief that their souls would be transported to a spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet that was passing by Earth at that time. It remains one of America’s largest mass suicides.
