Frank Lucas was a Harlem-based drug lord in the late 1960s and early ‘70s who famously bypassed middlemen and bought heroin directly from Southeast Asia. Lucas, who was immortalized in Ridley Scott’s 2007 film “American Gangster” starring Denzel Washington, was convicted of drug trafficking in 1976 and sentenced to 70 years in prison – but soon freed after becoming an informant and entering witness protection with his family. (He was convicted on additional drug charges in 1984.)
