Between 1985 and 2007, serial killer Lonnie David Franklin Jr. murdered at least 10 women in South Los Angeles – with a 14-year hiatus that earned him the nickname the Grim Sleeper. Most of his victims were Black women involved in prostitution and drugs, fueling criticism about the lack of police attention to crimes against marginalized women. Franklin was convicted of 10 murders in 2016 and died in prison four years later.
