As special prosecutor Archibald Cox investigated the Watergate scandal, he reached a standoff with President Richard Nixon, who refused a court order to hand over secret White House tapes related to the case. Nixon then ordered Cox to be fired, which prompted the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his deputy, William Ruckleshaus, who both refused the directive. Solicitor General Robert Bork carried out the order, fueling increased calls for Nixon’s impeachment. The president resigned in disgrace the following year.
