“Rebel Without a Cause” star Sal Mineo was just 37 when he was stabbed to death in the alley behind his West Hollywood apartment. The case remained unsolved for two years, with public speculation about Mineo’s bisexuality as a motive. Then Michigan authorities reported that Lionel Williams, a man with a long rap sheet on bad-check charges, had confessed to killing Mineo. He was convicted in 1979 and spent a decade behind bars.
