John Paul Getty III, the 16-year-old grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, was kidnapped in Rome by members of an Italian criminal organization who quickly demanded $17 million in ransom. But the billionaire was reluctant to pay – even after the captors sent a package containing the boy’s severed ear. When the family finally coughed up about $3 million – an amount accountants assured the senior Getty would be tax-deductible – John Paul was left in a gas station south of Naples.
