While practicing ahead of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Nancy Kerrigan was struck on the knee with a baton in an attack planned by associates of rival American skater Tonya Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. Weeks later, Kerrigan recovered enough to win the silver medal at the Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Harding, who insisted she had no prior knowledge of the plot, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution. Gillooly and three others were convicted for their roles in the crime.
