Dan White, angry that San Francisco Mayor George Moscone had not reappointed him to the city’s Board of Supervisors, stormed into Moscone’s office and shot him dead with a .38 revolver. He then killed Supervisor Harvey Milk, one of the nation’s first openly gay politicians. White was convicted of manslaughter after pleading “diminished capacity” from the stress of his lost job and a junk food-heavy diet – a decision that sparked outrage. He died by suicide in 1985, two years after his release from prison.
