Amanda Knox, an American college student studying in Italy for a year, became tabloid fodder after the 2007 murder of her flatmate, British exchange student Meredith Kircher. Knox, who had initially contacted the police, was convicted of Kircher’s killing in 2009 along with her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. But prosecutors established no clear motive and forensic evidence pointed to a known burglar who had also been convicted of Kircher's stabbing death. The Italian Supreme Court of Cassation ultimately upheld Knox and Sollecito’s acquittal in 2015.
