New Jersey accountant John List was in deep financial straits when he shot and killed his wife, mother and three kids, ages 13 to 16 in their New Jersey home. Their bodies were not found for almost another month, along with a note in which List claimed he wanted to save their souls from the world’s evils. List himself became a fugitive, living a quiet life in Colorado and Virginia for nearly 18 years until a tip from TV’s “America’s Most Wanted” led to his arrest. He was sentenced to five life terms after a 1990 trial.
