It's early in the morning at the Bates' house and the doorbell is ringing. Norma (Vera Farmiga) rushes to see who it is.

It's Dylan (Max Theriot), Norma's son from her first marriage. Despite her efforts, he has tracked her and Norman down. Norma is not pleased.

Norman (Freddie Highmore) runs into Bradley (Nicola Peltz) on his way to the bus stop. She asks about his disappearance from the party. They catch up, completely oblivious to the out-of-control car bearing down on them from behind.

As the car passes, Bradley comes to a sudden realization. "That's my dad's car!" The teens take off running towards the crashed vehicle, hoping they aren't too late to help.

They pry open the door, only to find Bradley's dad horribly burned and barely alive. Unable to speak, he stares at his daughter from the car.

Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) tells Norma that the man's name is Jerry Martin. It seems that someone set fire to Jerry's warehouse with him still trapped inside.

Dylan gives Norma a hard time, saying she's really picked a nice place to make a fresh start. She replies by laying down some ground rules. If he's staying, he's pitching in. Romero cuts her off. It seems they've found Summers' truck.

With Bradley out of school, Norman isn't sure who to work with on a group project. Emma (Olivia Cooke) makes the decision for him. She asks him to work with her, then invites herself over before Norman can get a word in.

The next morning, while Norma and Norman are hard at work, cleaning up any last vestiges of Keith Summers' untidy death, the doorbell rings. They both freeze, leaving Dylan to answer the door.

Emma has arrived, ready to work with Norman. Dylan can't believe it. "Hey Norman, there's a girl here for you," he calls out with a grin.

Emma is immediately barraged with questions from Norma. Where does she live? Where is she from? Dylan and Norman both try to interrupt so Emma can get away, but it's too late.

The questions continue, and start to become more personal. Norma asks Emma about her Cystic Fibrosis. Dylan and Norman are uncomfortable with the personal nature of this line of questioning, but Emma seems to find it refreshing.

Norma is getting ready for bed when she gets a visit from a very serious Sheriff Romero, and a slightly embarrassed Deputy Shelby. Norma answers Romero's questions, but draws the line at letting them in. She tells them to get a warrant.

The next day, Norma is driving through town when she spots Deputy Shelby. Thinking she may have found a sympathetic ear, she confides in him that she's worried about all the attention she's getting from the Sheriff.

Shelby tries to laugh it off, saying that it's just Romero's style, and Norma shouldn't take it personally. As a gesture of goodwill, Shelby offers to buy her a coffee. Norma takes him up on it.

Shelby tells Norma that Summers and Romero were childhood friends, so the case has a personal element for the sheriff.

Another customer mentions "The Woodchuck," so Shelby is forced to tell Norma about the silly, but fun, local lumberjack festival. He can't invite her to go with him, due to the case, but he suggests that if she goes, and he goes, and they meet up, who could find a problem with that?

Norma asks Norman's opinion on her outfit for the Woodchuck. "Does this top look like I'm trying too hard?" she asks. "That depends on what you're trying," he responds. Norma explains that she's going on a goodwill mission. The deputy could be a valuable ally.

Dylan gets a call on his phone from someone called "The Whore." When he answers and it turns out to be Norma, Norman gets angry.

Norman throws himself at his brother, but he's easily neutralized. Dylan says that Norma has ruined Norman, but his words fall on deaf ears. Norman's eyes have gone blank. He hasn't heard a word.

Norman lies on the floor, bleeding from his nose. "She's not a whore," he snarls.

Norma returns from a successful outing to find Norman sporting a huge black eye. He tries to play it off, but she's had enough. Dylan has to go. She leaves and Norman gets a text from Emma. "Meet me at my shop -- Important!"

Emma tells Norman that she's translated some of the "manga" that he found. It documents a sex slavery operation, and Emma thinks it might be true. She wants to investigate.

Emma suddenly leans forward and kisses Norman. "So," she asks, "are you in?" Norman smiles and nods.

Emma and Norman head out towards a mountain depicted in the manga. As they make their way through the woods, they find something unusual. "It's one of the pot fields," Emma says, matter-of-factly. "I've heard about them, but I've never actually seen one."

Before Norman can respond, two armed guards spot them and give chase.

Emma and Norman sprint through the trees at top speed. Suddenly, Emma recognizes something. It's the cabin drawn in the manga. She wants to stop, but Norman urges her on.

Norman and Emma tear across a stream, desperate to make it to her car before the armed men catch up to them. They scramble in just as the men reach the clearing. They're safe, for now.

Back in town, Norma drives past a strange sight. Deputy Shelby directs traffic as a man dangles from a yardarm, consumed by flames. She remembers what Shelby told her at the Woodchuck. "The people in this town, they deal with things a different way, but it gets dealt with. An eye for an eye."
