For 43 Years, Michelle Newton Didn't Know She'd Been Abducted

She lived her life as Amanda Blake until a November 2025 phone call led her to the family she'd never met.

2026 marks the first year Michelle Newton will be celebrating her birthday on October 5. That’s because, in November 2025, Newton, who’d gone by Amanda Blake, found out she’d been abducted by her mother at age 3 and living under a false identity for more than four decades.

“I was six months younger than I thought I was, so we're going to take that,” she said at CrimeCon 2026 in Las Vegas. “The birthday I celebrated my whole life is going to become my unbirthday.”

Last November, Michelle received a call from her 16-year-old son in Pennsylvania saying that a police officer had arrived at her house to speak with her. When she got home, the officer informed Michelle that her mom—who she knew as Sharon Nealy, but was actually Debra Newton—was in custody in Florida. Authorities eventually arrested Debra and indicted her on a custodial interference charge stemming from a 1983 abduction incident.

Debra pleaded guilty in May 2026 to criminal attempt of custodial interference and received a conditional discharge as long as she doesn't commit new criminal offenses for two years and pays all court costs within 30 days.

“I never wanted her to go to jail, but I did want something,” Michelle tells A&E Crime + Investigation. “In my victim statement, I asked for meaningful accountability. I gave examples: court-mandated therapy or community service, so she could understand the impact. She had promised me that when the sentencing was done, she was going to get up and address the courtroom and apologize to me and apologize to the whole family. That was the accountability I wanted outside of anything else, and that did not happen.”

What Happened to Michelle Newton?

Debra took Michelle from the Kentucky home they shared with Debra’s husband and Michelle’s dad, Joseph, in April 1983. Debra initially claimed she relocated to Georgia for work, but Joseph began getting a strange feeling about the situation after he couldn’t reach Debra a few weeks after her departure.

“I didn't know where to look, so I went back to her employer and talked to the CEO,” he tells A&E Crime + Investigation. “He said, ‘No, she quit four weeks ago.’ Then I said, ‘She took multiple trips in the last year. Supposedly you guys paid for that.’ He said, ‘Absolutely not.’ That night, a coworker of hers that had took one of those trips with her called me. She wouldn't go into great detail. She said, ‘I'll give you a name. I'll give you an address.’”

Debra’s co-worker also told Joe, “I can tell you your daughter is not in a good situation. It's not a good environment," he says.

So Joe headed to Georgia to attempt to get his daughter back. “When we got there, we didn't get past the front yard,” he recalls. “I met a lady there that, later I found more and more about what it was. And basically I had a choice: I could either have went in the house and probably been arrested, or go back and do it the right way.”

From there, Joe attempted to gain custody through the legal system.

“When I did get the first set of papers that custody was granted to me, I took that to Georgia and I rapidly found out that it was a piece of s---,” Joe says. “The court systems there said, ‘We're not honoring any of this.’ So I did get the governor's seal, took it back to Georgia and again, it was denied by their system. The papers don't mean anything unless somebody honors them. ”

Joe attempted to get Child Protective Services to intervene, but he claims they denied his request. “And that's when I kind of felt I'm fighting a system," he says.

Meanwhile, Debra took Michelle from Georgia to Florida.

“My earliest memory of me and my mom [was] probably our time in Florida,” Michelle says. “When we moved there, we had an apartment that overlooked a lake and there was wild ducks and alligators there. I remember going outside and playing with the ducks.”

Debra also got remarried around the time Michelle was 10 to a man named Wayne, who Michelle says raised her until she was 16. Wayne wanted to legally adopt Michelle, which brought the lack of clarity around her past to the forefront.

"She got really sketchy,” Michelle says of Debra. “I would kind of catch inconsistency in things that didn't make sense. By the time I was 14 or 15, I knew 100% something was very, very off. The more she would try to bury things, the more it would make me want to look and dig, but I was looking for all the wrong information.”

Because of that, Michelle’s attempts to work with private investigators to learn the truth about her identity failed. When a request for her birth certificate in New Jersey came back with nothing, Debra claimed it was lost in a hospital fire.

Defeated by the legal system, Joseph’s efforts to reconnect with Michelle faded as he didn’t want to become the “bad guy” in the story, he says.

But a CrimeStoppers tip in Florida in 2025 led to their reunion. Michelle explained at CrimeCon that an internet sleuth used facial recognition technology and AI to make a connection to Debra from a social media photo. Within six weeks of reaching out to Florida authorities, they had a match for Debra.

Though Debra has never shared her reason for fleeing with Michelle, her daughter said that her mother followed a man who was involved with a cult to Georgia.

“The person that she left with was really convincing and powerful,” she said. “They believe that he was involved with a cult. I'm not calling it that, it's what they have on paper ”

Joseph, who married Debra at 18, described the man as “twice her age” and having “had money.” “It was a group of people, it wasn't just one,” he added.

Upon Debra’s arrest, Michelle and Joe exchanged information via police and connected on the phone.

“It was the weirdest thing because everyone's crying, there's so much emotion,” Michelle said. “...I'm hearing like, ‘We love you, we missed you, you have no idea.’ And I'm thinking like, I don't know any of these people. How do I say I love you back? I don't even know!”

Then, Michelle made the 11-hour drive from Pennsylvania to Kentucky.

Joe admitted he “broke down” when she stepped out of the car.

“When we went inside and sat down with family, it just felt comfortable,” Michelle said, adding that they “were up ‘til close to 4:00 in the morning crying.”

Michelle and Joe have since spent Thanksgiving and Easter together and taken a roadtrip to Florida. She’s been trying to navigate her new life, including sorting her Social Security number and her credit history.

“I kind of feel like I'm technically somebody else's identity right now,” she said. “It's a mess.”

Still, Michelle now knows the truth, and “that's all I ever really wanted,” she said.
