In the early 2010s, Elizabeth Holmes claimed that Theranos’ technology could perform many medical tests with only a small blood sample. However, prosecutors believed she lied to investors and her technology didn’t work. During her highly publicized 2021 trial, she was ultimately convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit fraud on investors and three counts of committing fraud on individual investors.

The next year, she was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison. She reported to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas on May 30, 2023, and the new documentary You Can See Everything highlights the 34 days leading up to her departure.

In the midst of her downfall, Holmes met her now-fiancé, Billy Evans, and he has since remained a loyal partner.

Who Is Billy Evans?

Evans’ grandparents, William and Anne, have a successful line of deluxe hotels in San Diego called Evans Hotels, which they founded in 1953. They currently have three properties: two in  Mission Bay and one in the La Jolla neighborhood.

He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2015, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. While in school, he majored in Chinese language and literature and studied abroad at Fudan University in Shanghai. Evans previously worked at companies including Luminar Technologies, which works with self-driving cars.

Founding Haemanthus

In 2024, he launched the blood-testing company Haemanthus, which is named after the flower commonly known as a “blood lily.” The company is developing light-based technology that uses AI to analyze bodily fluids, such as blood and saliva, to look for signs of disease. Haemanthus stated on X in May 2025 that it wants to deliver “the unfiltered truth” and that the company isn’t a “Theranos 2.0.”

“Theranos attempted to miniaturize existing tests. Our approach is fundamentally different. We use light to read the complete molecular story in biological fluids, seeing patterns current tests can’t detect,” the company’s statement said. “...We use Raman spectroscopy, which researchers use to detect cancers, Parkinson's, and COVID. We're making lab technology accessible through modern lasers and AI.”

They also confirmed in the statement that Holmes has “zero involvement” in the company, and wouldn’t in the future.

Their Private Relationship

Holmes and Evans met in 2017 at a Fleet Week charity event. “I was totally in love with him,” Holmes told People in 2025.

Evans felt the same way. “I was captivated by her childish wonder and authenticity. She listened more intently than anyone I had ever met. We spoke for hours; I lost track of time, and even if I didn't know it…. I fell in love,” he wrote in a letter to the sentencing judge in 2022

He also revealed in the letter that he didn’t know who Holmes was until she gave him her business card on the night they met. Evans explained that they remained friends for a few months before starting a relationship. “I was admittedly hesitant to dive in given all that had been said," he wrote. "I was naturally conflicted; the person I knew did not align with the narrative others had crafted.”

In 2018, Evans proposed to Holmes during a concert from Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour. However, they are not currently married.

“Maybe we’ll get married someday. But our bond is more than a piece of paper,” she told People. “We bought rings on Amazon before I went to prison. It’s just special to me because our love is deep. It’s real.”

Evans added, “Everyone tried to break us, but instead we forged an unbreakable bond. She’s my best friend and soulmate. I believe her in every way.”

In another letter submitted to the sentencing judge, Evans revealed that after their San Francisco address was leaked during the peak of the Theranos investigation, he had the idea that the two should live a nomadic lifestyle in a truck, staying in Walmart parking lots, state and national parks and public forests. “Liz embraced the frenetic beauty of it, and we often reminisce about how it was the favorite place we ever lived,” he said.

How Many Kids Do Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans Have?

In July 2021, Holmes and Evans welcomed their first child, William Holmes Evans, in California. William’s birth caused Holmes’ trial to be delayed, as did COVID-19-related reasons.

While many thought the couple starting a family was a ploy to avoid going to prison, Holmes insisted that was not the case. “I know how the optics look, but I always wanted to be a mother,” she told People. “I wanted to have children, be a mom. It wasn’t planned, and I can’t worry about what others think. It’s just when the timing happened.”

At the time of her sentencing in November 2022, Holmes was visibly pregnant with her second child, Invicta. She gave birth in early 2023, just months before she went to prison. While Evans, Holmes and her legal team asked for a shorter sentence, her report-to-prison date was pushed back by a month amid Invicta’s birth as she appealed her conviction. In May 2025, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously denied Holmes’ petition seeking further hearings on her appeal

As Holmes’ sentence continues, Evans and their children frequently visit her in the Texas prison.

“My heart is broken with the thought of spending any days away from Liz, for a future in which my son grows up with a relationship with his mother on the other side of glass armed by guards,” Evans wrote in a memo to the judge before Holmes’ sentencing in 2022.

Since her sentencing, her prison release date has changed several times, which was most recently February 22, 2030. In September 2026, it was announced via the Department of Justice’s Victim Notification System that Holmes will be transferred to Austin Transitional Center, a halfway house in Texas, in August 2027.
