The Pastor Kills His Wife
When Flynn frantically called Tripp City 911 in February 2026, he said an intruder broke into his house and shot his wife while he was in his daughters’ bedroom. He wasn’t able to say whether the intruder was still there and stated he was in the bedroom with his wife.
“I rubbed her leg and said her name and she’s not answering,” he told the dispatcher of Ashley, adding, “there’s blood everywhere, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. The door to the garage was wide open…my daughters are here.”
Flynn and the kids were still inside the house when police got there. He told officers that he wasn’t in the bedroom when Ashley was shot because he had a cough and she asked him to sleep on the couch. He said he woke up when he thought he heard his dogs’ collars, and he went into his daughters’ bedroom to lay down.
“That’s when I heard it,” he said of the gunshots.
The Preble County Sheriff’s Office lent a deputy and a police dog to search around the house in the immediate aftermath. That deputy, David Laycox, said he noticed that he and his dog were leaving prints in the wet ground, yet he didn’t see any other prints around the house. The dog did not find a trail and had a “negative alert to any suspect…leaving the scene,” Laycox said.
Prosecutors also said that Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA were at the scene and that his devices showed him moving around the house, even though he claimed he was asleep at the time of the shooting. A crime scene technician with the Ohio Bureau of Investigation testified that the damage to a side garage door did not look like the forced entries she had previously investigated in about 20 to 30 other cases.
Investigators were additionally unable to find the gun that killed Ashley, despite the ATF and a trained dog being brought in to search. Detective Adam Bernard testified that investigators removed nearby storm drain covers and used a high-powered magnet to try to bring anything up. Eventually, he crawled into culverts and searched himself but still, turned up nothing.
Flynn was arrested three days after the shooting and pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, two counts of felonious assault and two counts of tampering with evidence.
Even without the gun, prosecutors told jurors the other evidence supports their claim that Flynn killed his wife, including his efforts to delete digital information, fabricated damage to the door to the house and Flynn’s movements in the hours leading up to his wife’s murder.
Caleb Flynn's Texts to His Girlfriend
When Flynn’s case went to trial in September 2026, investigators relied heavily on electronic evidence to form their theory of a motive, including a message Flynn sent to his mistress the night before the murder that said, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”
The recipient of that text message, Alleigha Botner, testified during his trial that she and Flynn met in 2022 while she was a 20-year-old intern at his church. Their affair lasted for more than a year and during that time, Botner testified, that Flynn said he hated his wife and he had thoughts of killing her.
“I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail,” Flynn wrote in a message to Botner on August 22, 2025. In another, he wrote, “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
“Those words tell you what this case is about: motive, intent and the truth behind the lies Caleb told after his wife, and the mother of his two young daughters, was shot to death in their home,” Miami County prosecutor Paul Watkins told jurors.
Police created 34 books of more than 107,000 printed messages between Flynn and Botner, which she read parts of during his trial. Prosecutors also pointed to what they couldn’t find as pieces of evidence: Botner’s work laptop went missing during a Florida trip, and her cellphone was dropped in water during the same trip—a month before Ashley was killed.
Botner’s attorney told CNN that Botner “was younger, she was a lot more naïve and she said a lot of things that obviously no one would ever expect would be publicized to the world.”
“She’s not proud of what she said and she’s not proud of how she acted,” he said.
Police found that Flynn was the sole beneficiary on a $100,000 life insurance policy on Ashley. They also produced bank records that showed Flynn and Ashley had $84,369.29 in a joint savings account on the day she was killed.
On September 29, a jury found Flynn guilty of nine charges total of aggravated murder and three charges of murder, two charges of felonious assault and three charges of tampering with evidence.
Caleb Flynn's Sentencing
Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on October 5. During his hearing, Ashley’s family read letters that had been written by the couple’s two children.
“Mommy was the perfect person, the absolute perfect person,” Ava, 10, wrote. “What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”
“Did you really even think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?” Alyssa, 12, wrote in her own statement. “By the way, Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you. You had the best life ever, and you decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age.”
The girls now live with Ashley’s sister and her husband, who said in court that the letters were “totally unedited.”
