A&E and The Recovery Project support National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in September, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of substance abuse treatment and promoting the message that recovery from substance abuse is possible. Hosting historic rallies in New York City in 2008 and 2009 and sponsoring events in 70 more cities nationwide, including NYC and Philadelphia in 2010 and 2011, The Recovery Project is committed to breaking the stigma surrounding addiction.
In 2008 and 2009, A&E celebrated National Recovery Month with historic walks across the Brooklyn Bridge, where we were joined by more than 15,000 people in recovery and their supporters.
In 2009 Governor David Paterson helped kick-off the celebration, which ended with an inspirational performance by the legendary Smokey Robinson. Gil Kerlikowske, the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy read a statement of support from President Barack Obama, who reinforced our belief that "the path to recovery is possible." Event MCs Jane Velez-Mitchell and Scott Clark kept the crowd of 10,000 on their feet with energizing chants and personal stories of their paths to recovery.
In 2008, more than 5,000 people joined A&E for the Recovery Project's inaugural event, where event MC and Recovery Comedian Mark Lundholm revved up the crowd and entertainer Rufus Wainwright summed up the emotion of the day, closing out the rally with his rendition of "Hallelujah." As they did the following year, A&E Interventionists and individuals profiled on the series, shared their emotional stories of the power of change.
