Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple religious cult, orchestrated the mass murder-suicide of his 900-plus followers at their compound in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones coerced his followers, including 276 children, to drink a cyanide-laced beverage; he ordered guards to shoot those who didn’t comply. The massacre occurred just after the assassination of U.S. Representative Leo Ryan, who visited the site to investigate claims of abuse.
