Just one day before his 45th birthday, Motown soul singer Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father after an argument at the family home in Los Angeles. Marvin Gay Sr., who was found to have a benign walnut-sized brain tumor, pleaded no contest to charges of involuntary manslaughter. He received a six-year suspended sentence and five years probation.
