Why I Decided to Become an EMS Worker
I got into EMS by complete accident. I took the EMT course so a friend could get a bonus at the service she worked for. About two weeks into working on a unit, I got a 17-year-old in SVT cardiac arrhythmia). Watching my paramedic partner use Adenosine to convert him into a normal cardiac rhythm BLEW MY MIND and my fate was sealed.
Facts About My Day-to-Day
I am still very much in love with my job. Whether it’s the mundane abdominal pain patient, or a cardiac arrest, it doesn’t matter to me. I love the skills we have: starting IVs, intubating, delivering babies, drilling needles into bones – I love it all. Everything we do serves a purpose. We hold a skill set that your average person doesn’t have. We are needed every day by someone. Who doesn’t wanted to be
needed in life?
I’m a big scaredy cat but I love being pushed to do different things. Work is my comfort zone and no calls makes me uncomfortable. I like being pushed into new things outside of work and I have friends and family who do that. Mostly I like eclectic things, mostly medical anomalies, so I like to learn about any and everything I can. I spend most of my free time with my nose in a book of some sort.
