Why I Decided to Become an EMS Worker
I was bred to do this job. I didn’t chose EMS, it chose me. I grew up in a medical family: my mom was an X-ray technician and my dad is a 32-year veteran of the New Orleans Fire Department. My childhood was filled with stories about the brave men and woman that saved lives. From the age of 5 I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others. I became an EMT and quickly fell in love with being on an ambulance. Being the person who is there to help save a life when no one else can, is a feeling I have never stopped loving. I got my paramedic license and haven’t looked back since. I love the challenge that it presents everyday. I love figuring out what treatment and medicine is appropriate for each patient’s specific complaint. Most of all I love taking care of people on the worst day of their life and being able to make it better.
Facts About My Day-to-Day
I love waking up every day and going to work. Someone once told me, “If you love what you do, you’ll never regret going to work everyday.” I still feel that way. When I am not at work, I spend time with my boyfriend, best friend, and my two hairless cats. I live with an amazing support system because both my boyfriend and best friend are also paramedics. We understand each other and are there for each other when we have a bad night or a tough call. The thing I love about working for NOEMS is that we are a family. We don’t just see each other at work, we are all involved in each other’s lives, on and off the clock.. Being from New Orleans I am a very family-oriented person and don’t know where I would be without their support. From BBQs to crawfish boils to just random days on the boat, I’m always spending time with my family.
I am completely content being on a boat, the beach, or doing anything that has to do with water. I have kneeboarded since I was I was able to walk and being on the water is therapeutic for me. It melts away the stress and horrible things that we see and deal with on a nightly basis. I love to cook and especially love creating my own recipes. I often throw dinner parties for my family and friends to try my creations. I have two Sphynx cats named Ramses and Sitre. They are my children and we often just snuggle up on the couch together and watch movies.
