Glossary

Shank:
A prison-made knife, which are commonly made from pens, razor blades, toothbrushes, pieces of fence, sections of steel bookshelves, utensils from the kitchen, screwdrivers, paper cutter blades, hanging file folders, foam cups, potato chip bags, awls, etc.
Snitch:
An inmate who cooperates with prison authorities. Aka: Rat, Canary
Whites:
The smocks reserved exclusively for those inmates being held in maximum security.
Wolf Ticket:
When an inmate barks threats he is said to be “handing out wolf tickets.” If the inmate’s bluff is called with a retaliatory shanking, you could say the instigator “got his wolf ticket punched.”
Zip:
One ounce of marijuana
Zip Gun:
A homemade weapon that can fire bullets or shot gun shells. Typically made from flashlights, pens, bolts, radio antennas, rubber bands, match heads, lighters, coils inside a coffee maker
The Zone:
The outdoor recreation area located between housing units, aka “Prison Yard” or simply “The Yard”
