Glossary

Fishing Pole/Fishing Line:
A device made from tightly rolled newspapers to form an extension of one's reach, often used with string made from torn sheets. The combination of the two can be used to secretly pass items long distances between cells.
Five-O:
A term used by inmates to alert other inmates that correctional staff are entering the unit. Similar to the phrase “Fire in the hole!” The term “Five-O” originates from the popular hit TV show “Hawaii Five-O”
Gang Violation:
A sanctioned disciplinary action by gang members for violating a gang rule. Examples of this type of punishment could be getting beaten up, stabbed with a knife, raped, killed, subjected to a pumpkinhead, etc…
G-of the-Compound:
The head member of the Gangster Disciples Gang at that prison facility
Green:
Free world currency or marijuana, depending on the context. Examples: “I want to get high, you got some of that green?” OR “Can your buddy can get 10 cell phones in here? Yes, but that’ll cost you a lot of green.”
Green Light:
Slang term for a contract killing, or "hit."
The Hole:
Solitary confinement, disciplinary segregation
Horn:
A cell phone (aka a “burner”)
Hot-Poppin':
When inmates place two pieces of lead or metal into a wall socket, and use the resultant sparks to light up a piece of rolled-up paper for lighting cigarettes and marijuana
