As soon as I met Matt Passmore, I knew he would be a lively interview. Matt is charming, easygoing and it doesn't hurt that he has a 1000-watt smile. We stopped by his trailer one afternoon while visiting the set of The Glades in Florida and he was gracious enough to spend some time answering our questions.
Being that Florida plays such a huge role in the series, and noticing that we were all drenched in sweat, the first thing I wanted to know was how the Aussie felt about the state and the weather down south. Shouting to be heard over the roar of the air conditioner, Matt had this to say about it:
Isn't it cute the way he says midgies and crocs! Thinking back on my interview the day before with Uriah Shelton, the surprisingly mature actor who plays Jeff Cargill, I wondered how Matt was able to build such convincing on-screen chemistry with the boy, despite having no children himself. Matt's answer confirmed that he is as sweet and fun off-screen as he is on. Please excuse the shaky footage. The cameraman was having some technical difficulties.
Who wouldn't love to play X-Box with those two? Anyway, when the The Glades first premiered, the big topic around our office was the fact that Matt didn't use his real accent for the role of Jim Longworth. In fact, Matt's American accent is so believable that it even fooled us native speakers. Since we've all witnessed the perfection of Matt's American accent, I thought it might be fun to hear one of Jim's classic lines in Matt's normal speaking voice. Again, please excuse the shaky footage. Matt was making everyone laugh, including our cameraman.
After that adorable display, I was ready to make Matt perform for me again, this time with an impression of one of his Glades colleagues. Matt surprised me with an impression of Clifton Campbell, the show's creator, whom I've spoken to several times. The impersonation was spot-on. Don't believe me? Check Clifton out for yourself.
Just as I suspected, Matt was a wonderful interview and I had a great time. For all you fans out there, I'm here to tell you he's as handsome and lovable in person as he looks on the show, and with season 2 of The Glades soon to come, I know his star will only continue to rise.
