"Beached" was directed by Artie Mandelberg, who has worked on TV shows such as Moonlighting, Leaving L.A., and Saving Grace.
The stretch of beach where Josh Richards was found murdered was filmed at John U. Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach, where we've filmed other beach scenes for the show. We started that particular shoot at 7 a.m. to get the nice backlight from the warm Florida sun.
The outside shot of Dwight's Dockside was actually Dania Beach Grill in Dania Beach. The bar's interior was filmed at the famous bar/restaurant, Bahia Cabana in Fort Lauderdale.
You may recognize Kayla Ewell, who played Maggie in the episode, from her role as Vicki Donovan on Vampire Diaries. She's also had roles on Entourage, The Bold and the Beautiful, Freaks and Geeks, and House, among other shows.
The Director of Photography on the show is responsible for setting the lighting and camera angles to create specific scene settings, such as the autopsy room in the lab. By the various shades of light coming in through the windows and doors in some of the scenes, you'd think the area is being filmed in a real building. But the lab and autopsy room is actually a set that was built on our soundstage in Pembroke Park, Florida.
The SWAT team members who were with Jim as he prepared to bust into Kyle Wheeler's house, were all real members of the Broward County Sheriff's Office SWAT team.
Kyle's house was filmed at a real house in Hollywood, Florida, but the scene where Jim chases Kyle over a drawbridge was filmed on the 14th Street Bridge in Pompano Bay — we closed the bridge down from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day.
In case you were wondering, stunt doubles were used for Kyle and Jim during the part where they jumped across the opening bridge.
The bridge-jumping scene was filmed by loading a camera on a technocrane, which was mounted on a barge in the waterway. We extended the camera into position just below the bridge for Kyle's jump and then just above the bridge for Jim's jump. It was a very cool night for the cast and crew. What a scene!
Matthew Glave, who played bar owner Dwight Stewart, has had a 20-year career in television and movies. Some of his recent roles included Detective Bailey on Criminal Minds, Detective Foster on Desperate Housewives, and Lt. Colonel Evan Connors on Army Wives. Seems like Matthew's got a knack for playing authoritative characters. Does he continue that streak with his role on The Glades? Guess you'll have to watch the episode to find out!
The scene where Dwight goes to his secret spot was filmed just off the bay at Oleta State Park in Miami Florida — another favorite shooting location. And YES, that was the real U.S. Coast Guard that made an appearance. They were more than happy to appear in an episode — it seems they are all big fans of the show. The entire cast signed one of their life preserver rings as a show of thanks.
